Brett's Fall Essentials

As the weather turns cold and fall arrives, it's important to update your wardrobe with highly functional items that can take you from a warm September afternoon to a cold December night with ease. Whether you're layering a zip front cardigan under a suit jacket, wrapping a scarf around your neck, or lacing up a pair of well-worn boots, this season's essentials make facing the elements a welcome transition from the lazy days of summer. Here are my key picks for fall:

The Cardigan — Ralph Lauren Purple Label - $295

A cardigan like this one from Ralph Lauren is versatile, sharp, and incredibly comfortable. Layer it under a suit jacket for warmth and leave your overcoat at home. Dress it up with a white dress shirt and skinny black tie.

The Shirt & Tie — Hugo Boss dress shirt - $85

Michael Kors black diagonal stripe tie - $95. A white dress shirt and black tie adds timeless appeal to almost anything: with a pair of jeans, under a jacket, layered with a cardigan or just showing under a lightweight V-neck sweater. Try a cotton stretch fabric for your next dress shirt to get a more custom looking fit.

The Fitted Jacket — Marc by Marc Jacobs - $358

Slightly fitted, high two-button, charcoal. Wear with jeans, a tee shirt, and sneakers—or dress it up with a shirt and tie to go from the office to a night out. To give your silhouette a sharp, tailored look, make sure the jacket fits close to the body, with armholes that are slightly snug, not wide. Leave just enough room for a sweater to be worn underneath.

The Jean — Ernest Sewn - $198

Finding the right fit with a pair of jeans is often a chore. Ernest Sewn jeans are just right—they're slimming, but not too skinny, and made with incredibly soft denim that feels worn in the first time you wear them.

The Lace Up — Prada - $495

Black leather, flat stacked heel. Prada shoes are effortlessly stylish, and made by the best shoe craftsmen in Italy. Always take good care of your shoes—the extra second it takes to put them in shoetrees will keep them looking great for a long time.

The Overcoat — Theory - $1,295

Adding outerwear on the coldest days doesn't mean sacrificing style. Pick an overcoat that fits perfectly and has just enough room underneath for a suit; and make sure it's not too long—¾ length is just right. This wool cashmere, military-inspired trench from Theory is a solid pick.

The Weekend Bag — John Varvatos - $995

Soft Italian calfskin leather duffel. A well broken-in, chocolate brown leather weekender is chic, timeless, and highly functional. If it gets kicked around by baggage claim, all the better.

The Corduroy Jacket — DKNY – $195

Wrap yourself in a comfortably worn, medium-weight corduroy jacket. This chestnut-colored version from DKNY is fully lined and has lambskin leather elbow patches that give it an old school, academic look.

The Boot — John Varvatos - $298

Made in Italy, Deerskin Ankle Boot. Weathered, functional boots are a key item as the seasons turn. They're great for navigating wet city streets or a weekend in the country.

The Winter Parka — Prada - $1,195

3-in-1. Windbreaker, made in Italy. Highly functional, 3-in-1 jacket. Wear the inner jacket on its own, the outer jacket as an overcoat, or combine the two for the ultimate protection against the elements, whether snowboarding or hailing a cab.

The Classic Sneaker — Adidas - $65

Superstar II. A white and black vintage sneaker looks great with pretty much anything. The Superstar II debuted in 1969 as the first low-top basketball shoe and has been going strong ever since.

The Scent — Chanel Platinum Egoiste - $65

Chanel's Platinum Egoiste cologne is fresh, elegant, and invigorating, with elements of lavender, rosemary, cedar, and bourbon geranium. A sophisticated, high-class scent for day, night, anywhere.

The Watch — Bell & Ross - $4,300

The yellow accents — The accents on this highly functional chronograph from Bell & Ross are striking with a rugged appeal. A perfect blend of style and performance.

The Read — Flags of our Fathers - $8

This staggering account of young men taking the island of Iwo Jima is moving and heroic—so it's no surprise it inspired a feature film. It's the kind of ultra-compelling read that makes you commit to an evening at home.

The Shampoo — Paul Mitchell Tea Tree - $15

This refreshing combination of tea tree oil and peppermint will help get your day started right.

The Sound — Ella Fitzgerald - The Best of the Song Books - $11

This album by Ella Fitzgerald is perfect listening for a night of entertaining with family and friends during the holidays.

The Skin — Evian Affinity De-stressing Smoothing Lotion - $20

Fall's cool air has less moisture, so pay more attention to your skincare regimen as the seasons change. Use moisturizer generously and protect your face with sunscreen. Evian produces a line of skin moisturizer not yet available in the U.S.—but you can buy it online.
